Multi Cultural Week

Multi Cultural Week 2020

Before half term we celebrated our annual Multicultural Week. During the festivities we participated in a variety of cultural workshops across the whole school. On Wednesday we had a whole school focus on Ghanaian culture and customs to celebrate our partnership with Gyetesia Primary School in Ghana. This included workshops depicting Ghanaian culture, history and tradition. We were particularly enthralled by the African Dance Workshop, storytelling of Anansi and the Clay Workshop sculpturing the Ashanti King’s and Queen Mother’s heads, which will be displayed in school for you to see shortly. We also learnt about the importance of the Djembe drum and the role it plays in passing down the tradition of the different clans and tribes.
Over the rest of the week we were thrilled by The Mighty Zulu Nation, who delivered an interactive dance workshop which was enjoyed by all. We also had Salsa Dancing, Bollywood Dancing, Chinese Ribbon Dancing, African Caribbean Dancing, and British Street Dancing. We enjoyed an Art Workshop depicting Hamas Hand patterns. Aga and Lisa delivered an inspirational Singling Workshop exploring the Caribbean and the Americas. Staff and parents supported the week by sharing aspects of their culture. This included talks about Mexican and Tanzanian culture.
We ended the week with our traditional dressing up day with ‘Costumes from around the World’. We were inspired by the imagination and the creativity of the costumes and we thank you all for the effort extended in ensuring your children took part with such enthusiasm. We would also like to thank you for your generosity in supporting our fundraiser. We raised a massive £500 for our twinned school Gyetesia Primary School, which included £189 from the Year 3 fundraiser on that day. We would also like to say a special thank you to Mrs Lanes family who donated £42.00 on the day.

Multi Cultural Week 2019

The start of this half term has been super exciting as we once again celebrate our annual Multicultural Week. We kick started the week with the Mighty Zulu Nation visiting on Monday. They delivered workshops for the whole school and as always delivered wonderful performances of their infectious singing and dancing.
On Tuesday Year 4 took part in Parkour Workshops and were amazed by their acrobatics and free running. Year 2 enjoyed Chinese ribbon dance workshops and Calligraphy workshops, while Year 1 explored Antarctica by sculpturing penguins using clay. Also on Tuesday our youngest children (Acorns, Pre School and Reception Year) were involved in Indian Dance workshops, while Year 5 children had a taste of the Mayan and Mexican culture having an in depth overview of the ‘Day of the Dead’ celebrations. Finally on Tuesday Year 3 enjoyed Polish Folklore Art workshops.
Moving onto Wednesday, we had traditional Bollywood dance workshops, global storytelling and street dance workshops. Thursday saw South American salsa dancing, African animal art workshops, songs of Africa and talks on the Ghanaian Rights of Passage.
On Friday we enjoyed traditional Caribbean steel pan workshops delivered by the internationally acclaimed artist Wade Austin and it was party time with Caribbean and Soca dance carnival workshops. The Mayans featured again on Friday, this time through clay art workshops, and finally we enjoyed poetic rap and storytelling by renowned rap artist Rob Bradley.
We would like to say a massive thank you to all of our parents who supported our fund raising event for Ghana on Friday. We raised £108 from the ‘costumes around the world’ dressing up day. Thank you for all your efforts in making the costumes and dressing your children so creatively.
Also thank you and well done to Year 3 who raised £157 for Ghana, by selling cakes, donated by Year 3 parents on their cake stall after school on Friday. Lastly, thank you to those of you who were able to join us in our first ‘Showcasing Community Visit’ we hope you enjoyed your time in school.
